Tornillo ISD considers cutting shared community internet service

While residents may have attended Tuesday night's Tornillo Independent School District board meeting to learn more about the accusations surrounding Superintendent Paul Vranish, the board followed the set agenda, which included a vote to end the shared internet service offered to the community.

"In this hostile climate, everyone's a sitting duck," said Superintendent Paul Vranish. "If somebody's internet isn't working and they don't get their taxes filed on time, I can see a complaint filed against me."

Tornillo ISD has shared its Wi-Fi internet service for nearly eight years, after residents complained the district offered a website for parents to check their student's grades, but not everyone had fast enough internet to check the website. The district doesn't charge a fee for the Wi-Fi service, but residents using the shared internet must pay $275 to install the antenna required to pick up the signal.

The board voted 3-3 to end the service. Vranish cited higher attorney fees required to protect the investment in case an antenna installation resulted in damage to a house if the service continued.

More than 500 people use the service in Tornillo, and for those who attended the meeting the tie-vote was frustrating.

"I don't think it's justified in the sense of the 510 of us who receive the service, being the ones that pay the price," said Marlene Bullard. "School districts carry insurance for such occasions should somebody hurt a roof while putting something on. I think this comes from a concern about claims or lawsuits that might be coming up."

Vranish has been accused of using the internet service as a personal business to collect money outside of the school district, and has also been under fire after an audit with the Texas Education Agency.
