Street lights turned on at Border Highway.

By Ruben Veloz

EL PASO, Texas —

Nearly two weeks after KFOX14 listened to residents' concerns about the number of accidents occurring near their homes, streetlights along the Border Highway are now back on, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

KFOX14 took images of the highway Monday morning and found the highway was indeed brightly lit.

Lights along the highway had been turned off for weeks because of construction, angering residents because of the number of car accidents occurring next to their homes.

Residents living along the highway told KFOX14 they were afraid to sleep at night fearing a car would crash into their home.

KFOX14 brought the issue to TxDOT officials, who told us enough lighting and signs were put in place along the highway to warn drivers to slow down.

But after the story aired, viewers told KFOX14 that the freeway was still pitch black.

In response to our story, TxDOT public information officer Blanca Del Valle told KFOX14 the department would work with El Paso Electric to bring the lights back on, to ensure the safety of the drivers and residents living along the Border Highway.

Two lanes will also be opened on both sides of the highway, and concrete barriers put in place to keep cars from crashing into the neighborhood, said TxDOT.

Neighbors say it couldn't come any sooner, and hope the lights will keep them safe at night.
