SUNLAND PARK, N.M. —
As registered voters from Sunland Park walked into the fire station serving as a polling location, New Mexico state police stood a few yards away monitoring the election day crowd.
District attorney Amy Orlando told KFOX 14 the state police were mainly onsite at City Hall at the request of the state auditor, who's been reviewing city finances, but the added law enforcement also served the additional purpose of keeping a watchful eye on the voter booths.
A number of voters said they felt the integrity of the election was compromised after police arrested one of the mayoral candidates for extortion and a city employee for voter fraud.
"I am a little ashamed just for the fact that things are going this way," said Fredrico Hernandez, who grew up in Sunland Park. "It is a small city but, things could be lot better. I came to vote to hopefully make some changes in our local government."
Ray Montoya said he has also been following the developing scandals in the mayoral race and chose to cast his ballot as an example to the rest of the city.
"Every vote counts," Montoya said, after voting. "If everybody wants our community to prosper, then they come out and make their vote count."
The two different polling locations at Riverside Elementary School, 4085 McNutt Road, or at Sunland Park City Hall, 1000 McNutt Road are open until 7 p.m. KFOX 14 will have live coverage of election results during KFOX 14 News at Nine.
