Shuttle bus could eliminate bridge wait times

By Genevieve Curtis

EL PASO, Texas —

The Port of Entry Task Force is considering different ways to cut down on pedestrian wait times at the international bridges.

Mayor John Cook presented some of those ideas to city council Tuesday.

One of the plans includes getting people off the bridges and into shuttle buses.

Cook said there would be a processing center for people to wait in instead of standing on the bridge.

"Right now, some mommies are waiting on the bridge with their child and he has to go to the bathroom and they're stuck on the bridge for two hours. So what do they do? They either go back into Mexico to use the bathroom or they stand on the bridge and tell the child to wait, and that is not right," said Cook.

Pedestrians would board a shuttle bus at the processing center using a type of credit card that scans the identity of the person getting on the bus. The shuttle would cross the border in a specific lane of traffic and would arrive at a securing processing site in the United States. Upon arrival, travelers would be processed by customs and border protection officers.

"If you bring them into a processing center, they'll actually have rest rooms, it will be air conditioned in the summer and heated in the winter, and it will be a very pleasant experience for them. Even if they are having to wait, they are at least waiting in humane conditions (and) not standing in the elements," said Cook.

He said they are still in the planning stages of the possible project but said CBP officers would prefer pedestrians cross in vehicles rather than on foot

"Customs will know who is on the way and they can do some preliminary searches with their database," said Cook. "This does not relieve people of having to have a passport or visa to come into the U.S. They still have to present that," he said.

The mayor also added that eventually the task force would like to see a light rail system between the sister cities.
