EL PASO, Texas —

This year, President Barack Obama's inauguration is expected to be smaller than his first historic inauguration in 2009 when he was sworn in as the first African-American president.

Although it will be just as historic as the first, some borderland residents tell KFOX14 they're already thinking about the issues they would like to see him address during his next term as president.

"Juarez has settled down, it has settled down with all the killings and stuff, but (we need) more control over that," said West El Pasoan Cezly Herrera.

Herrera and her boyfriend tell KFOX14 they would like to see Obama focus on immigration and violence along the U.S.-Mexican border.

"There was one time that I was like walking to Juarez," said Herrera, "and there was actually immigrants running and trying to cross over to El Paso. You never know what their intentions are trying to come over here, or maybe they do have good intentions, but it's just really dangerous."

Gun control is also at the top of most people's minds.

"Oh yes definitely it has to be done," said West El Pasoan's Jaime Blanco, "You never know who can get hold of a gun, it's just really scary."

While some agree that gun control and border violence are the big issues to tackle in the borderland, others couldn't say how the government should address them.

"I know there is a lot of stuff going on," said El Pasoan Eric Diaz "That's why I don't have a side on that stuff"

Other issues some borderland residents say they would like to see addressed are education, and raising the minimum wage.

A recent CNN poll showed 54 percent of Americans believe the president will do great in his next term; while 43% believe he will do worse.
