EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso police continue to investigate a car accident that killed a man in Northeast El Paso Saturday night.

The accident happened at 8:55 p.m. on U.S. 54 south by Hondo Pass.

El Paso police officials said the sole occupant and driver of a black 1997 BMW was dead at the scene of the crash when officers arrived.

Witnesses told police that the 35-year-old unidentified was driving erratically and at a high rate of speed. Police said the man was seen switching to the left shoulder in an attempt to pass a vehicle, when the man lost control of the car. The vehicle went across all lanes of traffic from east to west. The BMW then left the roadway, hitting a curb, a cement overflow drainage ditch, and then began to flip over.

The man was thrown from the vehicle, and the car caught on fire.

The investigation suggests that speed is a factor in the crash. It's unknown if any other factors played a role.

U.S. 54 was closed at Woodrow Bean & Transmountain Saturday night into Sunday morning, as the investigation continued.

This man becomes the sixth person killed on El Paso roads this year.

The man's identity is pending notification of family.
