EL PASO, Texas —

An on-line petition for Texas to secede from the United States has received enough signatures that it must be acknowledged by the White House.

Since last Friday, more than 60,000 people have signed an online petition asking the government to let Texas leave the United States of America.

However, some El Pasoans told KFOX 14 they do not think it is a very good idea.

"The military is big in Texas, and if Texas does leave the union all federal funding for our armed forces are out the door," said Christian Barron

That petition is found on the official White House website in a section called "We the People."

"I just don't see it happening at all," said Gabriel Barron.

Barron says he does not agree with the idea, but he and other El Pasoans told KFOX14 they understand where it came from.

"I was reading a lot of comments going around online and the consensus from what I can understand is a lot of people are hurt over Obama winning the election," said Christian Rivera.

Texas Republican Gov. Rick Perry's office released this statement in response to the petition:  "Governor Perry believes in the greatness of our union and nothing should be done to change it."

The creator of the petition says Texas would be a greater nation without the U.S., citing Texas as the 15th largest economy in the world.

"I think that secession is a ridiculous idea mostly because we've become a global needy people," said West El Pasoan Mia Villareal.

Another potential problem, a new country of Texas might not have many North American allies.

"Obviously we made United States our enemy, which is not the greatest start to any nation in my opinion," said Villareal.

According to whitehouse.gov the White House has until Dec. 9 to respond to the petition.

That's because the petition got more than the legally required, 25,000 signatures.

Other petitions have been filed for other states, see here
