EL PASO, Texas AND LAS CRUCES, N.M. —
The nationwide protests against Wall Street and corporate America are growing in the borderland.
"Occupy El Paso" and "Occupy Las Cruces" are two of more than 1300 cities across the country joining in the original "Occupy Wall Street" protest, which has now evolved nationally into "Occupy Together." Every state in the country has at least one city participating, and numbers are growing daily.
Although the "Occupy Wall Street" protest has been going for weeks, not everyone is clear on what the protest is about.
"All I've seen on TV is just a bunch of people on the street," said Michael Gallinar, a student at UTEP. "I don't know what they're doing or what they're protesting."
Critics of the movement have also cited a lack of clear demands calling for action from Wall Street or Washington D.C., which may stem from the movement's claim that it's leaderless.
On Friday, "Occupy El Paso" met in San Jacinto Plaza to discuss when they would start a big formal protest of the greed of Wall Street. The final decision was to schedule the protest for Saturday at the same time and location as the upcoming "Chalk the Block" art festival, also at the San Jacinto Plaza. Festival directors said everyone is welcome at the festival.
The protest is schedule to start at 8 a.m. It's still unclear if "Occupy El Paso" participants will end up camping on the plaza like many of the other nationwide protest camps.
"Occupy Las Cruces" is schedule to hold its first meeting on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Holy Family Ecumenical Church.
