No DUI El Paso aims at decreasing drunken driving

Volunteers set out over the weekend keeping roads safer

El PASO, Texas —

A service aimed at saving lives launched over the weekend, and organizers urge El Pasoans to use it.

If you had too much to drink, there is now someone you can call to pick you up and safely take you home.

"No DUI El Paso" kicked off on Saturday, but organizers told KFOX14 they need help getting the word out about its program.

The group founder, Tylor Rouse, said he wants to keep as many people from getting arrested for drunken driving.

"DUIs is actually a very prominent issue in El Paso. To be able to create an organization and to be able to operate for the city to mitigate DUIs is outstanding," said Rouse.

The organization's mission is to save lives and get people home safe after a night of drinking.

The idea was first born to help off-duty soldiers. In 2011, El Paso County reported 855 alcohol-related crashes. Organizers realized the program needed to expand, reaching out to the El Paso community.

"It's really not just an issue for off-duty military personnel that are drinking but, also citizens in El Paso that are drinking as well," said Rouse.

People who were out in the Cincinnati District told KFOX14 that it's not a kept secret that the city has a big DUI problem.

Rouse and his team not only want people who've been drinking to stay safe on the road, they're afraid of getting behind the wheel -- and becoming targets themselves.

No DUI El Paso has 10 volunteers. They can be reached at 877-366-7604 for their services.

A volunteer will pick you up and get your car home within the city limits.

When a volunteer arrives at the location they meet up with the patron and check the required documents: driver's license, registration and insurance.

The city of El Paso helped the program get started by funding the nonprofit organization.

Rouse said he hopes to alleviate drunken driving.
