New immigration policy opens opportunities for Sun City youth

By Genevieve Curtis

EL PASO, Texas —

President Barack Obama's administration is making a big change in immigration policy, choosing to grant temporary relief of deportation for immigrants.

The administration said it is not amnesty but stops the deportation of people under the age of 30 who entered the U.S. illegally as children. They must have arrived in the country before turning 16, lived in the U.S. continuously for five years, have no criminal history and be a high school graduate or have served in the military.

Many in the Sun City are embracing the policy and said it gives many young people in the community the opportunity to work and achieve higher education, providing temporary relief for children who are caught in the midst of a national debate.

A political science professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, Irasema Coronado says many parents may have legalized their residency, but for various reasons, their children have not, meaning many of these young people can't find work and can't achieve a higher education because they are not technically in the country legally.

Yet they have spent most of their lives in the United States and know no other life. Obama's policy will grant them some relief and the opportunity to work, go to school and contribute to society.

"We talk about state-less people on the U.S.-Mexico border because if you were to deport some of these young people, they would not be able to function in their countries of origin because they don't know the language, they don't know the culture, they don't know the customs. It would be very difficult for them to integrate into any other society," said Coronado.

She added many of these immigrants have served in the U.S. military.
Many on the other side of the debate say this policy provides incentive for people to break the law. Coronado argues these young people did not commit a crime.
