EL PASO, Texas —
While investigators performed a formal autopsy Sunday afternoon, residents of the Columbia Terrace apartments were outside placing flowers, candles, and balloons at the dented gate where a lower valley woman is accused of running down her husband early Saturday morning.
Laura Patricia Juarez, 31, is charged with the murder of her husband Salvador Juarez, 34, after the couple allegedly had a fight Saturday morning. Police said the couple had an argument, which lead to a physical altercation, and Salvador left the apartment on foot. Laura drove the couple's car looking for her husband and found him near the apartment complex entrance. It was there police accuse the woman of hitting Juarez with the vehicle and taking him back to the apartment where he later died. Laura Juarez remains in the El Paso County Jail with a $100,000 bond.
Ana Maria Terrezas lives less than 10 feet from the Juarez's apartment and describes the couple as "normal and happy." She said Juarez worked as a maintenance employee for an apartment complex next to hers, and was willing to use his skills to fix her apartment as well.
"Salvador would help me whenever he could," said Terrezas. "One day when I needed to get my air-conditioning fixed and I couldn't get a hold of management or maintenance, I asked him if he could fix my air conditioner and he said 'yes, of course,' and he fixed it."
Terrezas heard talking early Saturday morning but didn't investigate the sound until it progressed to sobbing and police radios.
"I walked out the door and that's when I saw Laura curdled up in a ball crying," Tarrezas said. "I asked the police officer what had happened and he said he couldn't tell me anything right then. So I asked why she was crying and he just said someone was dead inside her apartment."
Salvador Juarez is the fifth homicide of 2012, compared to seven at the same time in 2011.
