EL PASO, Texas – —
Despite last-minute compromises from the group trying to bring a triple-A baseball team to El Paso, one city representative said she was set on taking the issue to voters.
"Why can't we wait another month, and 6 weeks or so, the voters have a say in whether they want the baseball team or not," said City Representative Emma Acosta.
Acosta argued that when the offer first came to bring a major league baseball team to El Paso, it was believe that there was only a 'small window of opportunity.'
Since three months have passed since they initially voted for it back in June, she would like that opportunity to go to voters.
But it's uncertain if Mountainstar Sports Group will give city leaders that long.
The group revised their agreement with the city on Saturday afternoon.
The new compromises include dropping the non-compete and allowing the Diablos to remain playing at Cohen Stadium after the lease ends.
The group also increased the surcharge of tickets from 10 to 50 cents.
Mayor Cook told KFOX14 News he had learned about the group's concessions over the weekend.
"I am going to do what is best for the city of El Paso," said Cook.
Cook did not deny the possibility of a veto.
Earlier on Saturday he said there was always that possibility to use a veto but he had not decided on that.
Acosta's 'no' vote could mean that there wouldn't be enough votes to override the mayor's veto.
