EL PASO, Texas —
A married couple contacted KFOX14, claiming that an east side auto company scammed them and lost their important tax documents during the process.
A woman named Karina says that her husband heard an ad for "Can Do Auto Solutions" on the radio, promising a vehicle in return for filing your tax returns with them. Karina asked KFOX14 to not use her last name because her husband works for Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
"He thought, that sounds like a good deal, you do your income tax with them, they deduct the down payment for the car, you pay your monthly payments, and then you get the car right then and there," Karina said.
Karina said they brought in their tax documents, and they were given a car for a down payment of $2,700. She said weeks went by, and they still hadn't received the money from their tax returns, so they called the IRS.
Karina said the IRS told them they had no record of their taxes being sent, and that's when they started calling "Can Do Auto Solutions" to get some answers.
"The owner from Can Do Auto Solutions either was in a meeting or he was off that day, he just wouldn't return our calls," Karina said. "One day, my husband and I went in person and he told us he had lost all of our documents, he lost our W-2 forms."
Karina said that's when they decided to contact the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and the media.
"That's when they started cooperating, just from one day to another, they "found" the documents, when I went to pick them up, all he gave me was copies, he never gave me my original documents," Karina said.
Karina told KFOX14 when she asked the manager, a man named Arnie, where her original documents were, he told her that the company uses a third party to deal with people's taxes, and that the person responsible for losing them had been fired.
"There were other customers there and they kept coming up to us, telling us that we aren't the only ones having problems with the company, and asking us to tell them about our situation because they were becoming concerned," Karina said.
KFOX14 reached out to the manager multiple times, including going into the business to ask for him personally. Every time, the station was told that he wasn't there, or that he would call back. KFOX14 never received a response.
Karina told KFOX14 she simply wants to know where her original tax documents are, and she is worried her sensitive information might fall into the wrong hands.
"This can be considered identity theft, cause he is withholding information that belongs to me, that's my info and they're holding it from me," Karina said.
Karina told KFOX14 that on top of the problems with her disappearing tax documents, the car the company gave them often won't even start, and it doesn't have a warranty.
"They're just lying to us, to the community, and that's not right, they're committing fraud," Karina said.
