SOCORRO, Texas —
A Socorro man is recovering at Lubbock Burn Center after running back into a burning trailer home to save his young step-sister early Saturday morning on the 11200 block of Crowell.
Fernando Guerrero, 20, and Priscilla Coral, 17, were inside the home with Guerrero's 5-year-old step sister, Chanelle Chavez, when an unattended candle in the kitchen started a fire. The fire broke out in the middle of the trailer, separating Guerrero and Coral from the little girl who was sleeping on the opposite side of the trailer. When Gerrero and Coral escaped the trailer, Guerrero realized Chavez was still inside the burning mobile home and ran back in.
"Fernie was so brave to run through the flames," said Melissa Chavez, Guerrero's step sister and sister of the little girl trapped inside. "He was calling her name and she wouldn't respond."
Chavez said her little sister was scared of the fire and crawled under the bed.
"He wouldn't leave without her and by some chance he looked under the bed and found her," said Chavez through tears. "He saved her, he's a hero. He is her guardian angel, put on this earth to save her."
Mother Sonia Guerrero was working a graveyard shift when the trailer caught fire, just after midnight, she arrived after the fire had completely destroyed her home.
"Materials aren't what is valuable," said Guerrero. "But my children, my children are what matter."
Fernando Guerrero was transported to Lubbock for second degree burns after running through flames to reach Chavez. Coral and Chavez were taken to the hospital for smoke inhilation, but have since been released. Chavez also had burns on her hands and needed stitches according to sister Melissa Chavez.
The Red Cross has put the family in a hotel until they can find a place to stay.
