Police have charged 29-year-old Ever Mendez without bond in the death of 2-year-old Isaiah Villanueva.
In a recent police report, police said they found enough evidence to accuse Mendez of capital murder.
An affidavit from the El Paso County Jail revealed that an autopsy found Isaiah suffered blunt-force trauma to the stomach.
The report said one of Isaiah's siblings may have also been abused.
Salvador Martinez, a neighbor who lives next to the home, said he never saw any signs the children were being hurt.
"They were pretty friendly. We got along pretty well," said Martinez of Mendez. "We had conversations, but we didn't really associate too much with them."
A woman who lived next to the home where the boy lived said Mendez seemed like a very good stepfather.
Police reports obtained by KFOX14 News also revealed Mendez has a police history involving violence against family members dating back to 2010.
"We could have stepped in and helped this little boy out, but how were we to know that this was happening?" said a neighbor.
