Two big name companies pulled their businesses out of downtown El Paso, despite city attempts to revamp the area.

 Regis Bernard Furniture and Lawyer's Title of El Paso have both been in business in the downtown area for decades. Regis Bernard told KFOX 14 media partners it was packing up after more than a century because the store wasn't seeing enough customers. The downtown location is currently holding a close-out sale. Lawyer's Title of El Paso said the lease expired on the building the company owned for nearly 40 years. In both cases the businesses are still operating out of other buildings in East and West El Paso.

The El Paso Downtown Management District, responsible for promoting the downtown area, said it has $200,000 to give to businesses looking to improve its exterior to attract more business.

"We of course worry when a long time tenant moves out of the downtown area," said Veronica Soto, Executive Director of the Downtown Management District. "When that happens we always reach out to folks to find out what we can do to help business."

 One of the new features the DMD is unveiling is a map system for downtown to help promote businesses and restaurants and parking lots. The Central Business Association is working in partnership with El Paso city and the DMD.  Dennis Melonas, Executive Director of CBA, said the maps along with several upcoming festivals aim to draw more El Pasoans downtown. He said about 80 percent of the customers downtown are from Juarez. 

The Downtown Management District maps of Downtown are now available at:

The maps will be posted on kiosks and published online this spring.
