Latest email scam pretends to be the FBI

By Ruben Veloz

FABENS, Texas —

The Federal Bureau of Investigation wants El Paso residents not to fall victim to the latest email scam.

Jose Balderrama received one of these emails several days ago, and thought nothing of it, but when he and his family received them he started to worry.

"I called police, and they told me to call the FBI," said Balderrama, "They told me not to open it, and that it was a scam."

The email pretends to be the FBI saying there is a warrant for your arrest.

It also says if you don't turn yourself in and pay up, they will freeze your accounts and revoke all your property, which made Balderrama a little worried.

"At the beginning I was (worried) because I'm disabled," said Balderrama, “and for them to say they were going to cancel my bank account and they were going to come arrest me. I was like, 'Wow.'"

Balderrama and his family live in government-assisted home, because he receives help from the state, he was afraid he did something wrong.

The fake email even lists the name of an agent at the bottom of the email we weren't able to identify.

We contacted FBI officials in El Paso, and they said they are aware of the fake emails and are investigating.

Balderrama wants people to know about the email scam, before someone becomes a victim.

"I know there's a lot of people that are going to fall into it be scared and fall into it," said Balderrama

If you receive such an email, do not respond to it and delete it.

If you feel like you need to report an email of this sort, do so by going to the following link where the FBI can investigate.
