LAS CRUCES, NM —

A Las Cruces woman was arrested after police said another woman was fatally stabbed Saturday morning.

A neighbor spoke exclusively with KFOX14, saying she called police three separate times that night.

Police said 22-year-old Delia Vasquez was at a party at around 1 a.m. Saturday when Jacklyne Legarreta, 23, of the 1800 block of Seldon Avenue, arrived and began arguing with another woman after Legarreta accused her of looking at her boyfriend. Police said the argument turned physical, and that's when Vasquez went to break up the fight.

Las Cruces police said Legarreta then began fighting with the victim, before stabbing her in the chest with a knife.

"I heard them, you know, screaming and arguing back and forth," neighbor Stephanie Molina said. "It was really, really loud."

Friends drove Vasquez to the hospital, while police said Legaretta stayed at the apartment where she tried to clean herself.

Officers found her there and took her into custody.

Vasquez was taken to Memorial Medical center before she was flown to University Medical Center in El Paso, where she died Sunday.

Legarreta was charged with an open countof murder and tampering with evidence.

Legarreta is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $250,000.

Molina said she first called police around midnight with a noise complaint.

"The officers just drove around and then they left," Molina said.

Molina said she called again a couple of hours later telling police a fight could soon break out and then called again immediately following the stabbing.

Molina said she wished police took action after the first phone call.

"It could have prevented a death," Molina said.
