Kitchen fire forces restaurant to close

By Ruben Veloz

EL PASO, Texas —

A burner accidentally left on caused a restaurant grill to catch fire, investigators said.

The fire happened in the kitchen of the La Taquiza Mexican restaurant near Dyer and Quail around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators found the burner was left on, and ignited the grease on the stove.

A person passing by reported the fire after seeing smoke coming out of the building, firefighters said.

The restaurant was closed and no one was inside.

Restaurant managers say they will have to stay closed until they can clean up the mess and get approval from the health inspector.

The health department will determine whether the restaurant can reopen.

The fire caused some smoke and water damage and was contained to the stove.

The damage is estimated at $5,000.
