Sunland Park, NM —

Former Sunland Park, N.M., Mayor-elect Daniel Salinas will face a judge Monday on charges that began with a secret video tape of his opponent.

Salinas' attorney Joe Spencer told KFOX14 exclusive Las Cruces bureau that they will have a status hearing with a judge Monday, to discuss where they are in the case.

As we first reported Salinas was arrested in April 2012, after he allegedly threatened to release a video as blackmail of his opponent Gerardo Hernandez, receiving a lap dance by a topless dancer.

Salinas won the election, but because of his bond restrictions, the New Mexico Supreme Court ruled he could not swear in as mayor.

Salinas is faced with nearly three dozen charges that include extortion, bribery, and fraud.

Spencer says the case will also have a new judge and a new district attorney, which he hopes will help Salinas in the trial.
