EL PASO, Texas —
The first freeze of the season expected to hit the borderland overnight Sunday. Experts gave KFOX14 tips on how to prepare for the low temperatures.
On Tito Gomez's to-do list for Sunday was to help his brother-in-law winterize.
"Just get prepared, get ready," said Gomez.
Gomez is like many getting ready for the winter months.
Among the items flying off the shelves at Home Depot is insulation for pipes to prevent them from bursting.
"This is easy prevention and most people can do it without any difficulties," said Ray Brunk, who works for Home Depot.
Brunk also recommended picking up faucet covers. "It prevents the faucet from freezing in the cold winter months," said Brunk.
Another popular item, hot water blankets for people with outdoor water tanks or water tanks stored in a garage.
"They maintain a comfortable temperature of your hot water in the winter months," said Brunk.
Brunk said for under $20 you can protect your pipes and your wallet.
"If you put the prevention in place now, it will prevent higher costs in the future," said Brunk. "The damage water can do to your house can be very costly."
Brunk also recommends sealing windows and air conditioning units and weather stripping for doors to seal cracks. That will keep cold air hot and lock the heat in.
Heating experts like Cecil O'Hagan said it is important to have professionals check your furnace before turning it on, after months of being dormant.
"The furnace could put out carbon monoxide, unknowingly," said O'Hagan.
O'Hagan said to also make sure your furnace is properly cleaned. "The lint can catch fire," said O'Hagan.
Gomez and his brother-in-law completed their winterization and purchased a new furnace filter and picked up a carbon monoxide detector.
"This year we will see what happens, tomorrow, tonight, we will see what happens," said Gomez.
