EL PASO, Texas —

According to El Paso County Elections office, only 96,189 voters cast their ballots early this year, about 15 percent of registered voters, according to statistics released by the secretary of state.

It’s the lowest recorded voter turnout since 2004, when only 94,465 people voted early, compared to 2008, where more than 114,765 El Pasoans showed up to vote early.

Despite the low turn-out, many people told KFOX14 they cast their ballots early, while others said they just missed the chance to register.

"I wasn't exactly sure when it was; I honestly didn't see any ads about it or anything," said central El Pasoan Damian Silveyra, "I wish I could but I didn't have the opportunity to."

Many young people in El Paso told KFOX14 they also do not have the time to vote.

"I think that's the problem," said UTEP student Thomas Murphy, "People should actually make time and effort."

"It happens in every election," said west El Pasoan Kristin Chavarria, "People don't know or maybe don't do their full research."

This year's early voting results revealed that about 55 percent of early voters were women, and more than half were 55 years or older, according to statistics by the El Paso County Elections Office.

Many El Pasoans told KFOX14 the quality of life propositions are the driving force behind their votes, one of which will determine who will pay for the triple-A baseball stadium downtown.

"El Paso is a large city and has the potential to be great and grow up and be one of those top ten largest cities in the nation," said Eddie Noriega, who cast his ballot during the early voting period.

Voters tell KFOX14 no matter who or what wins, they're just trying to do their part.

"It's a gamble. Everything is a gamble," said Chavarria.

Polls open between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., and people who are in line before 7 p.m. will be able to cast their votes.

Those who arrive after 7 p.m. will not be able to vote.
