Chris Apodaca has had to take his sons to the hospital on multiple occasions, but his most recent trip caused him a fair amount of concern. Apodaca said he wasn't notified his 7-year-old son had fallen out of his chair and onto the floor because the student was dizzy, until it had happened twice.

"He had a big bump behind his ear, where it connects to the head, it looked the size of a marble," said Apodaca. "The nurse gave him ice for his ear and sent the boy back to class. As soon as something like that happens, especially if someone gets hit in the head, call the parents, call an ambulance."

When Apodaca picked his student up from Edgar Park Elementary, a teacher told him about the incidents. When he asked his son how he was feeling, the boy complained he was dizzy and couldn't feel his left arm, according to Apodaca. After calling the family pediatrician, the doctor immediately recommended the 7-year-old go to the hospital because the symptoms were similar to a heart attack, one of the side effects of the boy's ADHD medication.

Apodaca said he doesn't want the school nurse to get fired, but he does question her judgment.

"When I first approached the classroom to pick up my son for the end of school she said 'By the way, your son fell again today, I don't know what's wrong with the boy,'" said Apodaca. "There are a lot of kids that use ADHD medication like my son's. It could have been a tragedy for some other family who might not have been able to get to the hospital in time."

Renee de Santos, a spokewoman for El Paso Independent School District, said student safety is one of the district's top priorities.

"The campus administration is working closely with the child's parent to address his concerns and assure him that his child's safety and well being are a priority," de Santos said in an email. "While we cannot release information specific to this child, the District and all campuses remain committed to the safety of our students and communication with our parents."
