EL PASO, Texas —
Some border experts fear a new wave of drug violence is brewing between Mexican cartels and could spread to the U.S., according to a report by the El Paso Times.
A former DEA agent and an immigration lawyer in El Paso says cartels are gearing up for more violence.
However, West El Pasoan Laura Carmona says life in Juarez is improving.
She moved to El Paso to go to school but heads south of the border to visit her family every chance she gets.
"This weekend because of the boxing fight. All of the bars were packed. Everything was packed and you can see the difference in how things are right now," said Carmona.
Despite the threat of more violence between cartels, Carmona says she's not worried.
"I think that if we still have all this drug wars it's because in the U.S. they are the main consumers, drug consumers," said Carmona.
Another El Pasoan remembers a time when his friends would to go to Juarez's nightlife, but says he won't be heading back anytime soon.
"I am afraid of getting shot," said west El Pasoan Justin Sanders, "I don't even want to be putting myself in that position to put myself in danger."
Since 2006, there have been more than 100,000 reported murders in Mexico.
Despite warnings of violence spilling to the U.S. Sanders and Carmona believe the U.S. has it under control.
"I think the police did pretty well since 2008, keeping it over there," said Sanders.
"If you have something to be worried about, you should be worried, but if you have anything to do with it you should be fine," said Carmona.
It's reported that more than 40,000 Mexican people applied for U.S. asylum because of the drug violence.
