El Pasoans start Black Friday shopping on Thanksgiving Thursday

Shoppers wait in long lines for deals

By Ruben Veloz

EL PASO, Texas —

Hundreds of people lined up outside of stores throughout the Borderland before midnight Friday, waiting to get their hands on Black Friday deals.

As Thanksgiving turned into Black Friday, many shoppers thought it was worth the wait.

"Well, we just wanted to find the things that I wanted for months, but at a much cheaper price," said Fort Bliss soldier Laura Baldwin.

Baldwin and her friends have been shopping for deals since 8:00 p.m.on Thanksgiving.

"At least I got all my friends trying to get in on all the deals with me," said Baldwin

Papaya store supervisor, Marissa Corral, said they're expecting a better outcome in sales this year.

"Last year was our first year, so we didn't know what to kind of expect but this year is a little bit better," said Corral," "We know what to expect. It's actually a little bit better than last year, but it's just a little bit busier."

People at the mall told KFOX14 most of the items they bought are for themselves.

"Yeah, pretty much." said Baldwin, "If you see things for other people along the way, then you get them, but I'd say you go mostly for yourself."

Cielo Vista Mall General Manager Shawna Thomson says people should bring a lot of patience if they are going to be shopping at the malls this holiday season.

"I'd say try to shop as early in the day as possible," said Thomson. "The closer you get to Christmas -- it's just going to get similar to a day like this."
