EL PASO, Texas —
One of Texas' biggest publications has said now is the time to take El Paso out of the dark and into the spotlight, because nobody puts El Paso in the corner.
One determined writer says in Texas Monthly Magazine that enough is enough with the El Paso-bashing. Dagoberto Gilb wrote a heartfelt article that separates reputation from reality.
Some of us who call El Paso home are proud of where we live. But outside of the borderland is a perception by some that El Paso is the armpit of Texas. Part of Bill Blaziek's job is to keep an eye on the reputation of El Paso.
"There's been an awful lot of misinformation cast on El Paso and it's incumbent on us to get as much positive media whether we get it through press releases or whether we buy it in advertising on a reasonable basis," according to Blaziek, general manager of the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau.
In his article, Gilb says, "Time to stare. To be curious. To get smart. At the most western corner of Texas, an old pass tracks the route of ourfuture."
Blaziek says this kind of influence will bring visitors knocking on El Paso's door: "I think in the coming months you're going to see an awful lot of positive media coming from El Paso Texas. 'Cause there's no other city in the country that has such exciting news."
This is one of several positive articles Texas Monthly has published about El Paso. Blaziek is hopeful that each headline is a step in reviving El Paso's reputation.
"There's so much to see. I would tell you to go online with visitelpaso.com because we take the visitations here very seriously. We not only tell you where to stay and what to eat, but we have itineraries for visitors in the city. We have an itinerary for each of them," Blaziek said.
