10-year-old girl asks for blanket donations instead of traditional gifts to take to local shelters

EL PASO, Texas —

A young El Paso girl asked her birthday guests not to get her toys or clothes, but instead, to bring in new blankets to her birthday party.

Maya Avalos, who turned 10-years-old Sunday, hoped to get enough blankets to donate to the elderly and homeless from guests at her birthday party at the Peter Piper on Airway.

"I just like thinking about people being warm,” said Avalos. “People don’t have enough money to have beds and houses.”

Avalos told KFOX14 the bitter cold during these frigid winter days convinced her to ask her mom to ask guests to forgo the toys and clothes, and instead, she asked for blankets.

“My grandma and my grandpa are always so cold, and I didn’t want to think about the elderly or homeless people cold outside. So I just decided to give it to the elderly and homeless.”

Avalos said she was nervous at first about asking her mom about the special request. But it was something she was willing to risk.

Her goal was to collect at least 50 blankets, and Sunday night, the Avalos family told KFOX14 they collected 94 blankets.

Avalos plans on donating these blankets to the El Paso Rescue Mission, and the Child Crisis Center.

She hopes to make the donation on Wednesday or Thursday.

Anyone interested in donating blankets to help Maya’s cause is asked to email her mother, Michelle Barron, at mbarron1@episd.org. She will also accept blankets at Burges High School, between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
