EL PASO, Texas —

El Paso police are investigating a drive-by shooting that sent a man to the hospital in serious condition around 9:30 p.m. Monday night in a neighborhood north of Transmountain Road and Kirwood Street in northeast El Paso.

Officers said a man in a dark-colored car drove by and shot at a group of people, hitting a 25-year-old man in the thigh. He was taken to University Medical Center for treatment.

"I was just inside watching TV and then loud pops went off," said Jeremy Longoria, who lives five houses down from the shooting.

"I didn't know what it was, but then it was the wind knocking someone over. A few minutes later that's when the cops started pulling in," said Longoria.

The victim's foster mother told KFOX14 she was having a going-away dinner when chaos rang out.

"We were over here all relaxing, you know, and then you have people that you don't even know come over bring drama and then drama comes, but you come with guns," said Yoshi Atkins.

Atkins believes the shooting is in retaliation to a beating death her biological son was involved in five years ago.

The El Paso Police Department gang task force was then called in to investigate.

Police investigation revealed that the two groups of people had a verbal altercation earlier that evening at another location. It later continued on Kirwood Street where the shooting occurred, police said.

"At first it was like just three cop cars," said Longoria. "And then there was like about 11 that showed up, formed a line all the way down the street and all the helicopters started circling back and forth."

Officers put up crime scene tape to stop people from going into the home as officers conducted their investigation.

Officers said there were a lot of people outside the home before the shooting.

KFOX14 was at the scene as several people were taken down to police headquarters for questioning.

This is something Longoria says he's gotten used to.

"That area gets a little more attention from the cops, from what I've seen in the past few months," said Longoria.

Police said no arrests were made, and they are continuing their investigation.
