Construction workers accuse employer of withholding months of paychecks

By Natalie Tripp

EL PASO, Texas —

Dozens of construction workers building a new low-income housing complex in south central El Paso are accusing their employer of holding back paychecks for two months.

Gerardo Burrola quit working for Five Brothers Construction Corp., Thursday afternoon. Burrola said he didn't have electricity or water running in his home because without his paychecks he can't pay bills. Burrola also said his truck was recently repossessed.

Five Brothers, based in Odessa, Texas, is just one of the sub-contractors working with Pavilion Construction, based in Portland, Ore., on the Paisano Green Community for the Housing Authority of the City of El Paso.

Shane Griffith, spokesman for the Housing Authority said the problem in the chain of command is between Five Brothers and its employees.

"Even though the Housing Authority is not directly involved, we are aware of the problem and working to facilitate as much as we can to resolve those issues," Griffith said.

KFOX 14 spoke with owner of Five Brothers, Alex Rodriguez, who denied any association with the employees.

"There are people saying I owe them money and stuff, but I don't know who they are," Rodriguez said. "I just found out about this all today. They're sending me time sheets with names that I don't recognize or I didn't authorize the hiring."

But less than three minutes after KFOX 14 finished talking with Rodriguez, the owner called Burrola to talk about paying the employees.

"He's a liar," Burrola said. "He contradicts himself and forgets what he tells people."
