EL PASO, Texas —

A fallen hero was laid to rest to Friday. Friends, family, the El Paso Police Department and city leaders said goodbye to El Paso Officer Jonathan Molina.

Molina died one week ago, while off duty, after being beaten while trying to stop teenagers from vandalizing his car, police said.

Friday was somber as the city paused to pay tribute to Molina.
With all the pomp and circumstance a hero deserves, El Paso police officers helped lay their fallen comrade to rest.
Members of the Marine Corps stood at attention as Molina's coffin, draped in the American flag, passed by. Molina was also a Marine and served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Inside St. Patrick Cathedral it was standing room only. Cameras were not allowed inside but KFOX14 was there as Molina's parents and family members mourned a sudden and senseless loss.
Also in attendance were Mayor John Cook, Sheriff Richard Wiles, and City Councilman Carl Robinson.

During the homily, the priest said, "This is a time when El Paso can hold its head high because there are men and women like Officer Molina, willing to serve."
A motorcade of more than 50 police vehicles departed from St. Patrick's and made its way to the burial at Fort Bliss.

The choir and congregation sang, 'Amazing Grace' as Molina's casket was carried out of the church.
El Pasoan's lined Alabama to see the motorcade pass by.

"To pay our respects to a fallen officer, it's just important to pay our respects and that the community comes out," said Arturo Montero, one of those along the route.

Police believe 17-year-old Juan Antonio Gonzalez is responsible for Molina's death.
Gonzalez has been charged with capital murder and is being held at the El Paso County Jail with bail setat $5 million.
