EL PASO, Texas —

At least 19 people were cited for not showing proof of insurance or a driver's license Thursday, said El Paso police.

The insurance checkpoint was carried for about an hour on George Dieter Drive and Turner Road Thursday night.

About seven police officers were conducting the checkpoint, which lasted from around 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.

This is the latest effort by El Paso police to crack down on the number of uninsured motorists on Texas streets.

Some El Pasoans are opposed to the checkpoints but others support them.

"It's a little intrusive because they take up our time," said Gaelyn Davis, an El Paso resident. "It's a little annoying but I understand where they're coming from."

According to officials, El Paso ranks second behind Dallas, Texas for the number of motorists driving without insurance in the state.

UTEP student Marc La Puma said he's driven without a license because he couldn't afford it.

"I've driven without insurance. I know how it goes," said La Puma. "It can definately be a  stickler for unaccounted tickets."

The insurance checkpoints are held randomly throughout the City of El Paso and are held each week, said El Paso police authorities.

According to the El Paso Municipal court, fines for not providing proof of insurance can range from $175-$350
for the first offense, and $350-$1,000 for subsequent offenses.
