Teachers in El Paso's local area have not been instructed to have any sort of discussion with students during class time, but they are getting ready to field questions and offer support with the help of school counselors.
Arlinda Valencia, president of the Ysleta Independent School District's teachers union, said children everywhere are inevitably going to be talking about one of the nation’s deadliest school shooting that happened in Newtown, Connecticut.
"It can be any school, anywhere, anytime. That is something we have to deal with everyday. The main thing is that we have to be prepared," said Valencia.
Valencia said teachers are not being told what to tell students about the shooting but believes teachers are already mentally preparing themselves for students’ questions.
Although Valencia believes most students have already had a conversation at home with their parents, because there is much more to learn about the shooting and the news coverage will continue to for weeks, she is certain students will be talking about the tragedy at school.
"I think teachers need to think about how they're going to answer the question. If they feel like this child is having some anxiety then they definitely would need to take time to refer them to their school counselor," said Valencia.
However, Valencia believes the subject should not be brought up unless a student approaches the teacher or class with questions about Newtown’s school shooting.
Valencia believes if teachers are having a tough time coping with the tragedy, then some students will too.
"I'm having a difficult time. I'm sure all the teachers in the schools are having a difficult time,” said Valencia.
Other local school districts said they were doing the same, referring teachers to send students to counselors.
