El Pasoans in Lower Valley will determine congressional election in Dist. 23

By Veronica Macias

EL PASO, Texas —

According to Pete Gallego’s campaign spokesperson, El Pasoans in the Lower Valley will determine the outcome for the U.S. Congressional election in Texas’ District 23.

The Redrawn District includes 60,000 new El Paso residents.  In total, the district holds 100,000 El Paso County residents.

"El Paso voters will determine the result of this election,” said Gallego's spokeswoman Rebecca Acuna.

That is because according to Acuna, the district is 50 percent Democrat, and 50 percent Republican-- and both candidates want to win over these new voters.

El Paso County is historically Democratic due to its large Latino population.

People in the Lower Valley tell KFOX-14 News they had no idea El Paso residents had such an influence on the turnout of the election.

“I don't think that people-- it’s really sad to say-- I don't think that they would know that we or the Lower Valley has that type of influence,” said Lower Valley resident Claudia Franco.

"It has not been one of the greatest turnouts like in 2008. Like we expected, but it has been a fairly good turnout in that area,” said Elections Administrator Javier Chacon.

Election officials confirmed that the last day to register to vote was October 6.
