El Pasoans decisively approve three propositions; HOT rate will fund ballpark

By Genevieve Curtis

EL PASO, Texas —

An increase to the hotel/motel occupancy tax rate will fund a majority of the city's downtown baseball stadium after voters passed the proposition Tuesday.

"I've been euphoric all night, from the moment we saw those results I was stunned at the margin," said Wilson.

The Garden Restaurant in downtown played host to a watch party for those in favor of all three bond propositions on the ballot, including El Paso Tomorrow PAC and city leaders.

The propositions, specifically the HOT increase, were issues that had seemingly polarized the Sun City. At times the fight between those for and against got down right ugly, with opponents targeting City Council members and City Manager Joyce Wilson, even accusing them of corruption. Even through the harsh criticism, council never waivered and now the public has spoken, in favor of the cities actions.

"We gave the citizens what they wanted and I think they have spoken loudly tonight," said Wilson.

While Tuesday vow of support from the public, may not silent the opponents completely, it certainly weakens their argument.

"We did what we thought was the right thing. We were open, we were honest, we reached out and the people responded that this is what they wanted," said Wilson.

When the night began, many in attendance told KFOX14 they were confident and optimistic but said, "You just never know."

Around 7:15 word began to spread that early voting numbers showed El Pasoans voted in favor of passing all three propositions and cheers erupted in the restaurant. The first two propositions showed strong numbers, but the margin was much closer for the HOT rate.

"Its good news, but it's not over yet," Woody Hunt told KFOX14, remaining cautiously optimistic.

But as the polls closed and results rolled in, the margin of those "for" the three propositions began to grow and the crowd called it a decisive victory and began to celebrate.

Wilson, visibly emotional from excitement, told KFOX14, "Today started as the worst day of my life, with what went on in Council today, and now it's the best."

Wilson credited the voters for their vision for the city's future. "I'm just so proud of this community and these citizens, the mayor and council," said Wilson

Ricaro Horrow, a consultant for the ballpark project, said he's worked on similar projects in 50 cities and never seen one so contentious and in the end, the results so decisive.

The city manager even apologized to the opposition for some "off the cuff comments" she had made in recent weeks.

"I want to apologize on the record to the opponents. I said some fairly derogatory comments about them. And certainly as opponents and citizens of this community they deserve to be treated with respect," said Wilson.

Wilson said she is excited for the future of El Paso and all the new changes the three propositions will bring.

"I can't even comprehend right now what the transition will be for this community for the next five to 10 years. It will be awesome, it will be absolutely awesome," said Wilson.

The party died down early, with many heading to other watch parties for other races in the city, knowing their biggest race was already won.

Wednesday, city officials will head back to work, knowing they have the support of the Sun City

"Tomorrow is a new day for EL Paso, this city will never be the same," said Wilson.
