Rep. Dee Margo says his loss may be due to redistricting

By Veronica Macias

EL PASO, Texas —

On election night, Democrat Joe Moody was leading incumbent Dee Margo in the State Rep, District 78 race.

Unofficial numbers show that Moody lead Margo with more than 2,000 votes.

"I lost," said Margo by the end of the night to several people at his election watch party that took place in the Upper Valley.

This is the third time Moody and Margo ran against each other.

Margo and Moody first fought for the state representative seat in the presidential election of 2008. Margo then unseated Moody in 2010.

Despite campaigning until the final hours of the election, Margo said his loss could be due to the fact that he lost several voters when the district was redrawn.

"Redistricting has a significant impact on District 78. It is not the same district we're running under right now. It's not the same district we had in 2008 and in 2010. Not by a long shot. It's very different," said Margo.

During this election, Democrats Naomi Gonzalez and Marissa Marquez both crossed party lines and endorsed Margo.

Both candidates ran with education platforms. Margo said he strived to make Texas Tech Medical School an independent university from Lubbock in El Paso.

Margo sat with supporters watching the results come in at the Riviera Restaurant in El Paso's Upper Valley. He thanked everyone for coming out and said the plan was to focus and spend time with his family after this election.
