Anthony, TX mayor arrested; District Attorney says what charges are related to, locals react

By Gina Benitez

ANTHONY, Texas —

"All I wanna tell the people is, everything's fine. The town is in great shape, the council's behind me 100 percent," said Art Franco, Mayor of Anthony.

Just one day after his arrest, Mayor Art Franco speaks out to KFOX14.

He said, "I believe when everything comes out, it's gonna be okay."

Franco was arrested Friday, for allegedly tampering with government records.

"I'm sure the people know this isn't the first time something like this has happened to me and it probably won't be the last," said Franco.

The mayor hardly addressed the charges, but did say its business as usual for the city of Anthony.

The DA's office tells KFOX14 the charges are related to false information on a document regarding a city employees pay.

An Anthony Water Works employee, Oscar Torres, was also arrested yesterday on the same charge as franco.

The city clerk tells us that Texas Rangers have been requesting files on both men.

"As far as the disaster that happened in Sunland, that's not happening here at all," said Franco.

Most residents we spoke with weren't surprised by the charges.

"When you think about all the other things that's going on in anthony and el paso about everybody being corrupt, yeah, it brings up a question," said one resident.

Another resident added, "It's always been that way and it's never going to change."

"In my opinion, he did something wrong. Because no one that does something good gets arrested, right?"

Franco has been charged, but not convicted of anything.

Mayor Franco added, "I don't worry about that, that can take care of itself. I worry about the town, doing good for the town and taking care of the town."
