Local ER hopes not to see you tonight

By Bernadette Flores

EL PASO, Texas —

It seems like the smartest plan for ringing in the new year: staying in instead of going out. Customers we caught up with outside of a West El Paso liquor store tell us they'll be doing just that. "'I've seen a lot of accidents and I don't want that to happen, I want to start the new year off right," said one customer.

The staff at University Medical Center, El Paso's busiest Emergency Roomand only level one trauma center,  is hoping everyone does just that. But they're ready for whatever the night brings. "We all have our standard mandatory staffing requirments. We don't let up one bit just cause it's a holiday," said Blas Mesa, ER director at UMC.

UMC says New Year's Eve used to be one of the most horrific in terms of accident victims they saw, but things have slowly changed. "Nowadays with more enforcement and with no tolerance and check points we've seen it dwindle down tremendously," said Mesa.

What has changed is the accident victims that do come in seem to be getting younger. UMC is where the victims of Wednesday morning's fiery double-fatal accident were treated.

Everyone on staff knows people will be celebrating. They just hope your night doesn't end with them. "The end result is us, you're going to be looking at us in our trauma beds, and that's always a scary sight for anyone," said Mesa.
