Lincoln National Forest Prepares To Reopen

Related

Signs warning motorists of extreme fire danger are just about everywhere along U.S. 82, but they could soon be a thing of the past as fire restrictions ease and officials prepare to open Lincoln National Forest to the public Friday.

National Forest officials said the moisture that's fallen was enough to open the forest again, although the forest will still be under stage two fire restrictions.

Shop owners in Cloudcroft said they're excited the prospect could bring more tourists to the trails and to their shops.

"It should help. It definitely affect us when the forest is closed, so [hikers] will be back up here enjoying the cold weather and will be able to get out into the woods," said Matt Willett of High Altitude.

Lincoln National Forest will open at 8 a.m. on Friday.
