Levels Of Arsenic Found In Chaparral Water

CHAPARRAL, N.M. —

A Chaparral water company said despite one of their wells exceeding federal arsenic levels, their water is safe to drink.

Lake Section Water Company sent a letter to customers this week notifying them that one of their wells came back with arsenic levels at 10.5 parts per billion, the government standard is 10 parts per billion.

“I haven’t drunk the water since I got the letter,” said Nicalasa Solis, a Chaparral resident.

Although arsenic has proven to cause cancer in high levels, Lake Section Water Company said the water they are putting out is lower than the standard and only one of their many wells tested with a level higher.

“We feel there is absolutely nothing to worry about,” said John Colquitt, owner of Lake Section Water. “The health effects occur at a much higher limit than what the government mandated limits."

Colquitt said there is no worry to the public because the well is not being used and hasn’t been since March. He said if the well in question is used, the water is blended with other wells lowering the arsenic level.

The well will be retested in October.
