Leap Year Celebration Attracts Thousands

EL PASO, Texas —

More than 10,000 people are expected to flock to Anthony for the Leap Year Festival. The giant birthday party, in honor of people who only get to see their real birthday once every four years, attracts revelers from around the world.

"England, we also had some from Australia,” said Anthony Police Chief Ed Miranda.

Friday, the celebration started with a breakfast at Steven Lee Hall. Throughout the day there will be food and music at Anthony Municipal Park. The huge celebration continues through Saturday.

The first to arrive at the celebration was Connie Rooney from Whippany, N.J.

“Oh it's been a long journey, but it was certainly worth it,” Rooney said. “I mean, how often do you get to celebrate your leap year birthday." Rooney said she was a guest on Martha Stewart's show.

“Martha Stewart is calling us ‘leaplings,’” Rooney said.

Each person born on Feb. 29 will receive a goody bag from the city of Anthony. Friday’s festivities include a Leap Year parade, live entertainment every hour, and a dinner.
