Late-Night Crash Claims Man's Life

El Paso police responded to a crash involving a 4-door Nissan Altima at the intersection of North Yarbrough Drive and North Loop Drive just before 10:20 p.m. Wednesday.

"For unknown reasons [the driver] at this point lost control, struck a pole and went through that pole before hitting another light pole," said El Paso Police Department spokesman Chris Mears.

Jesus Perez of East El Paso said, "We heard a thump. We saw the light pole going down almost touching the floor, bouncing back and forth."

One witness said when the crash happened, she was at a stop light on the opposite side of North Loop Drive.

"I got really scared," said Estela Lopez of the Lower Valley. "I was scared and hit the brakes because since I saw all the pieces flying, it scared me."

The driver, an unidentified 22-year-old man, died at the scene. The impact was so severe, it split the car in half on the driver's side.

"We couldn't tell where he was but we could tell that he was way in the back seat in the bottom," Perez said. "The steering was on the right side of him."

Police blocked off the road for nearly 6 hours as they investigated this deadly accident.

Several long time residents who live near the crash said they’re not surprised an accident happened in that intersection because drivers are always speeding through that area.

A toxicology report is pending to see if alcohol also played a role in this accident.
