Las Cruces Police Warn Public

Las Cruces Police want to alert you to a scheme.

They say a hispanic woman is approaching businesses soliciting donations for caps and gowns on behalf of prospective graduates of Onate High School.

Already the woman has taken $200 from one business.

A spokeswoman for Las Cruces Public Schools wants the public to know there is no such fundraiser.

"They have to pay a cap and gown fee and so there's no doubt that there may be kids in need of help, but the school would help in that regard, if they go to their principal and let them know that they're having trouble or jostens who does our cap and gown service theywould help scholarships for kids needing help, this would not be a practice that we would go and have someone solicit on the schools behalf."

Anyone with information is asked to call Las Cruces Crimestoppers at (505) 268- thousand.
