Las Cruces man found guilty of murdering ex-wife given life sentence

By Jesse Martinez

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Horace Carlos Solomon, the man found guilty of stabbing his ex-wife to death in August 2011, was given a life sentence for the murder, according to Amy Orlando, the Dona Ana County district attorney.

Solomon was found guilty of stabbing 35-year-old Jenny Bates-Solomon to death in front of her children before he passed out drunk next to her lifeless body.

Solomon was found guilty on eight counts Thursday, including first-degree murder, felony murder, kidnapping, child abuse, false imprisonment, aggravated burglary and interference with communication.

Solomon was sentenced to life in prison for the murder charge and 40½ years minus one day for all the other counts, officials said.

"I am extremely proud that Jennie's family was able to advocate of her behalf even after experiencing this profound loss," Orlando said. "It is clear that no sentence or term of imprisonment will ever undue or make right the wrong that has happened in this case. I urge all victims and family members of victims who suffer from domestic violence to please seek help and I ask our community to continue their much needed support for victims of domestic violence."
