Las Cruces City Council considers improving access to recreational activities for teens

By Samantha Manning

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Las Cruces City Council, department directors and other members of senior staff meet with teens in the juvenile citation diversion program each quarter, and the officials said in their most recent visit, the teens focused on the need for more access to recreational activities.

Teens told KFOX14 they would also like more options and more fields for sports.

"All I do is go to school and go home," 17-year-old Thomas McCullough said. "It's boring."

McCullough attends Mayfield High School and said he would like more opportunities to go swimming.

"We need better pools, more public pools," McCullough said.

During Monday's work session, the city said it's important to create more access to transportation so teens can get to these places.

A possibility includes using bus transportation from schools.

Seventeen-year-old David Watson says a bus system with more frequent pickups and stops would make a big difference.

"Not all parents can drive, and not all kids can drive," Watson said.

The city plans to survey more teens and to create more partnerships for teen programs.
