Special Assignment: Las Cruces alley massacre remembered

By Joshua Zuber

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

This Sunday marks the 23rd anniversary of the Las Cruces bowling alley massacre.

To this day, the two men who police say are responsible for the killing of four people have yet to be found.

What makes the story so chilling is that one of those shot and killed point blank was a 2-year-old girl.

Ida Holguin, a survivor of the shooting, shared how she is doing today with KFOX 14.

Today, she is a 56-year-old grandmother.

Her 2-year-old granddaughter, Olivia, is the light of her life, and she also has three daughters and a son.

Just like many other Americans in their 50s, the native Las Crucan takes medication.

But, she said, every time she takes medication, she has flashbacks back to Feb. 10, 1990.

"He said this is a hold up. I'll never forget those word," Holguin said.

It was a Bowl Las Cruces, now 10 Pin alley, that two men stormed the business before it was open.

"I was coming out of the freezer. I was fixing everything because we were supposed to have a big crowd. No one was supposed to be there until 9 o'clock. It was 8."

Those men were there to rob the business, eventually taking some $5,000 in the process.

They would fire 25 shots, killing four people: Amy Houser, Steven Teran, and his step-daughter, Paula. Steven's 2-year-old daughter, Valerie, died 45 minutes later at the hospital.

Three others would be shot in the head: Melissa Repass, Stephanie Senac and Ida Holguin.

"They shot me on the head, the shoulder, the arm and I still lived," Holguin said. "I didn't even feel the one on my shoulder or my arm. I did not feel them. I was scared."

Documentary filmmaker Charlie Minn said it's the stories of that awful day that drove him to make the feature length film "A Nightmare in Las Cruces"

"Here we are sitting here almost 22 and a half-23 years later, and we are left without any arrests. That's inexcusable. Something has to be done to revive the case," Minn said.

"Shooting children, babies, it's probably the worst thing that you can do."

He said it is the mystery of who could have been so cowardly to commit this horrendous crime that keeps him talking about year after year.
"I really wish someone in the community would step and reveal what you know so we can solve this thing. Please, step up so we can do something for the victims and their families," he said.

One of the reasons, Charlie believes, this case remains cold is because the Las Cruces Police Department lacked the technology and he said the proper procedure to get the job done. This, despite having surveillance footage of the crime scene.

"Not every crime scene has video. But this one did. That's why it hits your heart, because you actually see children on the floor," Minn said.
"I heard a lot of stories of how people were allowed to go into the bowling alley, and they weren't really checked," Minn said.

Plus the two men attempted to torch the bowling alley after they robbed and killed.

"On top of it, there was just so much chaos, disorganization. Of course I wasn't there, these are things I've been told," Minn said.

Still, authorities are looking for those two men.

"One would be about 70. The other one would be about 50. I have a feeling one of them is alive."

A feeling that Holguin doesn't share, but she certainly wants closure.

"That's why I think we have these interviews once a year because they might have information and probably never even knew that we are still looking for them," Holguin said.

Because when she sees tragedies like Sandy Hook, or the shooting of Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, she is reminded of what happened to her.

"When I see her, the way she walks, that's how they thought I was going to be."

And she is reminded of a life that went on with her kids and 2-year-old granddaughter

If you have any information on this crime, you are asked to call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at (575) 526-8000.
