LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Cars waited in lines stretching into the street Tuesday to take advantage of the unusually low gas prices at Murphy Express at the intersection of Avendia de Mesilla and Valley Drive.

"I can't believe it," Las Crucen Michelle Neal said. "I was in my seat and said, 'Does that really say $2.27?"

Murphy Express dropped 30 cents Tuesday from Monday when it was around $2.57 a gallon.

The manager told KFOX14 prices are controlled by the corporate office in Arkansas and it's a decision that definitely helped with business Tuesday.

"I think it'll help everybody tremendously," Las Crucen Steve Miller said. "This will give people extra money to buy presents for family."

Some driver said they wanted between five and 15 minutes.

New Mexico State University economics professor Chris Erikson told KFOX14 it seems like an old fashioned price war with competing gas stations lowering their prices to fight for business.

Drivers like Gus Ortiz said no matter what the reason, he's saving big.

"This truck, when gas prices are high, takes about $60, $70 to fill it up and this way I can fill it up for $5," he said.

But be warned: The manager said there's no telling how long these prices will last and she wasn't kidding.

The prices at Muprhy Express jumped up again to $2.75 later Tuesday afternoon.
