La Mesa Neighborhood Struggling After Storm

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

Anytime it rains, it’s a constant headache for residents who live on Twilight Road in La Mesa. Their street turns to nothing but thick mud.

“There will be times when we're stuck two or three days without being able to get out,” said Bugsy Levario.

The problem is so bad it even creates a safety issue.

“If I were to call emergency services to come for whatever reason, I don't think they would be able to make it,” said Levario.

It’s clearly a messy and frustrating situation for residents, but their options are limited since the road is private.

“When it's private, you have the anti-donation provision that you can't spend any money or tax dollars on private property,” said Oscar Vasquez Butler, the county commissioner for the neighborhood.

The only way the county would be able to help is if the resident's would be willing to give their road to the county.

“If that is the only option I think it's something we would have to heavily consider,” said Levario.

Vasquez Butler said he believes they should consider the move because of the safety concerns.

“There's a public safety aspect to it, too, that they should consider dedicating their road,” Butler said.

If residents do choose to have the county take control of the road, commissioners would first need to see if the road would be worth taxpayers' money to buy.
