KFOX14 only station to catch up with Couture; still no answers on why she left

By Samantha Manning

LAS CRUCES, N.M. —

KFOX14 caught up with former New Mexico State University president Barbara Couture at a Las Cruces business, but she left through the back door, quickly ran into a car waiting for her and did not answer any of KFOX14 questions about why she left.

KFOX14 asked Couture whether she was fired from her position and why she left.

NMSU's Board of Regents said during a public meeting Monday that Couture's separation with the university is mutual but did not provide an explanation why she left, saying the details will be kept private.

"It's kind of a slap in the face to the school and students and faculty to turn around and not be very transparent about some things," NMSU Student Brittany Barham said.

Barham told KFOX14 she expected more openness from the Board of Regents after it indicated that transparency was a priority.

But she said there has been a silver lining -- the professors.

"Personally, I've had some amazing experiences throughout this transition with a variety of difficult faculty members that have really made everything more comforting," Barham said.

But while professors may not show it to the students, many of them are also angry with the school's administration.

KFOX14 got ahold of emails between faculty members discussing their frustration with the school's lack of answers.

"How does one not become bitter and disillusioned with this institution?" one faculty member wrote. "This entire event is just shameful."

"It's a sad state of affairs and so very disappointing," another faculty member wrote.

The Board of Regents will conduct a meeting Oct. 15 at the Carlsbad campus and is expected to appoint an interim president.
