KFOX Update: Constable Asks For Suspension

Related

El Paso, TEXAS —

Only KFOX reported that Constable Pete Melendez of Precinct 4 had parked illegally next to a fire hydrant for about two hours in early August, and now he's asking to be punished.

Monday, he plans on asking Commissioners Court to suspend him for one day without pay, because, according to a letter, he wants to "lead by example, not exception." He declined to be interviewed about this decision. In the letter, he said the suspension would cost him about $180 worth of pay, which more than covers the city's parking fine of $125.

As KFOX reported, a parking enforcement officer walked by Melendez's car while it was parked illegally, and did not issue a ticket. After being asked by KFOX if he should have received one, he replied, "They should have brought it to my attention I was parked there."
