KFOX Uncovers ID Issue; Chief Wiles Speaks About Quintana Incident

EL PASO, Texas —

Southwest Airlines officials first told KFOX on Monday that Quintana allegedly attempted to get a discounted fare, normally given to FedEx employees, by showing a signed letter on FedEx letterhead.

In new developments Wednesday, KFOX has learned from Southwest that Quintana allegedly presented an El Paso Airport ID badge at the Southwest ticket counter; a badge given to her when she worked for FedEx.  According to TSA officials, FedEx should have taken that security badge from Quintana when she resigned from the company on Sept. 21st.   FedEx officials said they have an investigation open into what happened with Quintana, and they said it is standard procedure to take all FedEx credentials from an employee when they resign.

On Wednesday, El Paso Police Chief Richard Wiles revealed for the first time what charge they are looking into.  "The current criminal allegation being investigated against Rep. Quintana, is for forgery," said Wiles.  A class A misdemeanor carries a punishment of up to a year in jail.  Wiles also addressed how the case came to his department in the first place, since Quintana's attorney argued it's politically motivated.  "We do not allow political influence to enter into our decisions about when or how we investigate criminal allegations," said Wiles.

Wiles said the city has an ethical obligation to taxpayers to look into any alleged incident involving any city employee who uses his or her position or city property to gain a benefit.  "They have an obligation to have us look into that, and they notify us of that and we begin an investigation, and that's the end of their involvement in it," said Wiles.

Wiles said the Special Investigations Group of the El Paso Police Department is handling the investigation.  Wiles said he cannot put a timetable on when the investigation will be completed.
